Old Hotel Bistro in Old Town Clovis
There is a new restaurant in Old Town Clovis located at the former home of the Victoria Rose Restaurant in the historic Clovis Hotel building. The new owners Cora and Bill Shipley have transformed the first floor into a half-retail, half-restaurant establishment serving a quality lunch menu.
I could smell the seafood melt before it even arrived at the table and it had my mouth watering as soon as it caught my eye. Who doesn’t love shrimp and crabmeat served with cheese on a toasted roll? Delicious! The bread was toasted just the right amount and the crab/shrimp combination was excellent.
Blackened Salmon Salad
If you’re watching what you eat but still want to feel satisfied, the salmon salad is for you. It rests on a bed of greens with a cucumber relish that beautifully adds color to the overall dish. The fish offered decent flavor but had a nice crust on it with the cucumber relish complementing nicely.
Mama’s Meatloaf Sandwich
Served open-faced, the meatloaf for the sandwich is wrapped in bacon. Yep, bacon. The meatloaf absorbs the bacon flavor and keeps it tender and juicy and yet doesn’t fall apart (a problem I often have with my meatloaf). Still tasty but not my favorite.
Whiskey Bread Pudding
I didn’t quite know what I was getting when the whiskey bread pudding came out. With large caramelized-sugar butterflies attached to the dish (styled for the photo), this was one of the most well presented dishes I’ve ever come across. I was almost too impressed to try it! However, I did and I could taste hints of whiskey-sweetness in the raisins without the punch-in-the-mouth of drinking actual whiskey. It was good!
Overall, this is a great place for lunch. The prices are reasonable and you’ll be happy with the portion sizes. I’m definitely going back sometime soon so I can enjoy that Seafood Melt again!
